What Are The Different Types Of Braces?

There are several orthodontic treatment options that address problems that include a misaligned bite (over or under bite) and crooked teeth. The primary dental devices use to address dental misalignment include traditional metal braces, Invisalign trays and clear braces. Which braces are the best largely depends on the kind of orthodontic treatment you specifically need to end up with an aesthetic, balanced result. After a consultation and examination, your orthodontist will be able to recommend a treatment that will be based on the degree of the dental misalignment, the severity of your bite and your desired goals regarding treatment conditions and the possible end results.

Braces and malocclusion
Braces correct malocclusion, also referred to as “malocclusion) which includes, overjet, crossbite, open bites and other bite problems. Braces can also deal with crooked teeth and the two (bad bites/crooked teeth) are often interrelated. In some cases, however, teeth might appear to be straight but the jaws might be improperly aligned. In this case, treatment can be highly effective and prevent problems down the road like chewing and speech problems, extra tooth enamel wear, premature tooth loss, severe jaw problems including misalignment. These problems occur for several reasons, including genetics and injuries. Sometimes these dental issues are caused when a child losing their baby teeth too early or too late, and in some cases it’s due to thumb sucking.

Very few people are fortunate enough to be born with perfect teeth. Fortunately, braces can make a significant difference, providing you or your child with a healthy, beautiful smile.

What are the different types of braces?

Traditional Braces
These braces are made up of standard metal brackets. Traditional braces are the most common types and over the years have become considerably sleeker and a lot more comfortable. With metal braces, you can also add fun colors to your smile through colored elastic bands, making your braces uniquely yours. Since you’ll be making follow up appointments to the orthodontist, you’ll be able to change out the colors to fit your mood or even for the holidays.

The Invisalign braces option are not only convenient, just like their name suggests – they’re basically invisible. Invisalign involves wearing a custom fitted, clear set of removable trays. Every new set of the aligners provides a slight adjustment to the movement of your teeth. Invisalign aligners are extremely comfortable, because theyíre designed with a pliable substance and fit snugly but comfortably on the teeth. In addition, since they can be removed, you can take them out when you want to eat, drink, brush or floss your teeth. In other words, they make maintaining your oral health a lot easier.

Clear Braces
These braces are similar to traditional braces except that they’re a less visible option. With clear braces the brackets are made using translucent materials.

Whichever orthodontic treatment ends up being the best for your specific case, your braces will be able to straighten and align your teeth, improve your bite and oral health, enhance your appearance and leave you feeling better about yourself.
